I LOVED this book BUT ....
Oct 09, 2025
I devoured this 8-hour Audible listen in a single day.
I genuinely couldn't help myself. The writing was that good — articulate, beautiful, insightful, and raw. I laughed and cried and said yes, yes, yes more than I can remember from any book. I was so enamored with it that when I found out Liz Gilbert would be speaking in Austin, I didn’t hesitate. I rearranged my schedule, bought a $100 ticket, and made sure I was sitting in the front row.
I started recommending the book to everyone — close friends, coaching clients, even the parking garage attendant who probably wasn’t expecting a literary recommendation that day. I was experiencing a full-blown reader’s high.
So imagine my surprise when my people starting sharing their take on the book... and not all of them were glowing.
Some said it was too dark. Too intense. Even annoying!
At first, I was genuinely bummed. I wanted a partner in crime — someone to dissect every detail with, to savor the insights, to wax on about how much this story mirrored pieces of our lives, too. I wanted someone to get it.
And if I’m honest? I was embarrassed.
How could I love something others found dark, intense and annoying!?
But here’s the thing I think we need to be reminded of and not ashamed of- not everything that speaks to us will speak to others in the same way. And that’s okay.
We each come to stories carrying different questions, experiences and lessons.
So— I’ll keep raving about the books that hit me at a deep level- even if it feels a little vulnerable (because you know, what if they hate it and then judge you as a weirdo!)
Because sometimes, being seen starts with letting ourselves be seen — even if it means feeling a little exposed.
So the PS is - sample this book on Audible before you buy!!
